Unit 32 assignment 1
Task 1
What are Idents and what are the purpose of them?
An ident is a clips that can last between 3 and 30 seconds and is usually shown between
Idents have different purposes for TV channels they are as followed:
To express channels identity
Brand the channel
To market and promote the channel (by appealing to the target audience in a way that makes the audience stand out from other channels – as they are in competition
Segmentation (break up programming) and provide information to the audience
Rebrand the channel keep up to date and on trend and update look for example of rebranding
Sponsorship
Message – ethos
For commercial channels

Task 2
Identity
Idents are used to show the identity of the channel, for instance the TV channel CBBC has its own identity that being that it is more aimed towards primary school children that are age 6-12, examples of shows that are aimed at 6 years olds is ‘Shaun the sheep’ and a program targeted at 12-year-olds is from the show ‘Wolfblood’,  you can see this from the idents that they have used of the years. The look of them have more childlike visuals such as using character from the shows on the channels and having overall more cartoonish visuals than BBC One.
The reason that making the identity of the channel obvious matter to them is because by doing so means that they will be able to distinguish themselves from other channels and standout among the other channels, the way that CBBC takes advantage of this by again making use of those cartoonish style visuals and using the TV show characters because it is able to give people an idea for their target audience.
The example that I have linked in below is a collection of CBBC’s idents.

Branding
Idents are a good way to build a brand for channels, because they are able to appeal to a target audience through the design which will make sure that the channels are able to stand out from each other.
An example of a channel that is using idents to make a brand for the channels is BBC three. In this case the style of the idents for this channel make clear that they are trying to appeal
to a younger audience than the other BBC channels would appeal to. The reason I think that BBC three is trying to appeal to a younger audience is because the design of the ident and how the visuals seem like they are reaction to the music played along with it a bit like you would see in a music video and to me that seems like something that would appeal to a younger teenage audience rather than an older audience.

Marketing
Idents get used to market and promote, this does mean that could be directed towards marketing the channel or sometimes it can be to market a certain product. Typically, it will mean that a company will pay money to a particular channel so that they can have their ident played before a particular show start and when it goes to an ad break and they will say that It is sponsoring the program.
The one I have looked at is from Suzuki, which had their ident shown before ‘Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway’ as they were sponsoring the program which is told in the duration of the ident.
The reason that Suzuki using an ident to market their car is effective for them is because it is shown right before the program is about to start so people will know when the program is about to start or to continue meaning that people will watch it more as they know that after the ident has finished the program that they are watching will continue from where it left off. In terms of marketing this particular ident is effective in showing off their product is because the car is always the first thing to be shown in the ident and maintains centre position within the shot and this is a good way to maintain focus on the car and for a viewer it is good way to get them to focus on it and if you are trying to market a product then it is a good way for the viewer to focus on it.
Another reason that Suzuki choosing it to have an ident marketing their car before a program like ‘Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway’ that is because the car seems to be more like a family vehicle and since the show is one for the family then there is more chance for a parent to see this ident and potentially be interest in buying a car from Suzuki.

Segmentation
An ident is for segmentation or in other words it is used to break up each of the programs both before the show is going to start and when the show goes to an advertising break/when the show has finished and so that it can provide information to the viewer such as what program is about to start.
An example of this is from the channel All4 and this ident is to show and let the viewer know that a film is about to start and as a viewer it would be able to let you what is coming on next for the channel and it could also help the viewer decide on if they want to watch the film or if they are going change over. This ident could also be used to when segmenting the film as it goes to an ad break and comes back from one it is also useful as someone who changes channel to this one is aware of what is being played on this channel.

Rebranding ITV
Idents are also a good way to rebrand the channel, so they are able to keep up to date or to simply update the channels look.
A channel that has done this is ITV, in 2012 ITV wanted to ‘start again’ with their channel and this rebrand was handled by Rudd studios. One way the rebrand showed a visible change with the channel is that with the logo and that change to be something that is more colourful and they something called colour picking so that colours of the logo change depending on the program that is being shown, this is effective for an audience because it is able to give more or an idea as to what type of program/the tone of the program is being shown as the colours typically are based around the show that is about to be shown.
Linked bellow is an ident after the ITV rebrand.

Audience appeal
Ident are something that are used to appeal to their intended target audience so that they are able to get their target audience interested in the channels so they would become interested in the channel and would remain a viewer of the channel.

Task 3
Look at the ‘library’ ident for the TV channel BBC four and this ident is a good way to show the brand of the channel and that is coming off as one that is more mature and that it is targeting an audience that is of an older age and I am getting this from this ident as younger audience wouldn’t be interested in seeing this type of ident also the design of this ident does seem more clean a mature as it isn’t trying to be quirky or funny in anyway because it is straight to the point and that is doesn’t try to look childish or appealing to a younger audience. This type of ident would also be used for segmentation as is for the BBC TV channels they don’t have advertisements on their channels so they would be used so they are able to break up the programs for the audience watching. When comparing this ident to of the same company, BBC in this case, but a different channel, BBC three, then it is clear to see how these channels are different from one another even though they are part of the same company. The main way that they are different is in the design of the two idents as one is clearly aiming towards an older audience due to the way that this ident is made but then comparing it to the BBC three ident focusing on the way that ident has been designed such as the look of the logo and the visual style of it then it is clear that this is appealing to a younger audience than BBC four is and these idents are good at show that even though a channel is owned by the same company the idents

Task 4 – Uses and Gratification theory and how does it apply it your idents?
First what is the Uses and Gratification theory? This theory is focusing on what an audience uses a media text for (in this case an ident) and what they are able to take away from it.

Looking at an ident from the TV channel Dave and then applying the Uses and Gratification theory to the ident, I am able to analyse what an audience member could get from that particular ident. What an audience is able to get from this ident is an idea of what is coming up next on the channel (in this case it is the TV show ‘Red Dwarf’) because it shows stuffed animals with an ‘H’ on their forehead and this is the same as one of the characters on the show, so if you are familiar to the show then you will have an idea that the show is about to come one because of it. The audience is also able to get an idea for the type of show that it is a sci-fi type show as one of the idents show an owl that then teleports away which could show that it is a sci-fi show.

Task 5
Sky one Ident analysis.
The ident for Sky one is an ident that is straight to the point and not humours as all it has with in the ident is what looks like bits of glass is coming firing out of on box and then landing in another and then the box falls on its side then the glass begins to form the Sky one logo and then once formed the glass continues to fire out of the box. The ident itself isn’t busy as all there is in the ident is the glass coming out of the box and also a few people walking in the background of the shot and because of this I would say that this ident is some that you can be quite a passive viewer to as there isn’t a lot that you would have to engage with as it is not trying to get the audience to engage with it and it is not giving any information to the audience about what is coming up next on the channel. The overall speed for the ident is one that feels natural as it doesn’t feel like it is rushed as it has a sort of natural progression to it because it takes enough time to make it clear what the ident is trying to visually do.
Moving to looking at the lighting of the ident it is bright lighting which could be reflecting the tone of the channel that it has more of lighter tone to the channel and shows programs that are similar to them. I also think that logo is also reflecting of this tone of the channel because it has a bright and vibrant colour to it.
This ident has a purpose of segmentation and the reason that I think that is because it comes off as an ident that would be used to break up the programming because it isn't really giving out information about the channel as in what program is coming up next and also there is an accept of identity because as i mentioned before it could give the audience an idea towards the identity of the channel.
